TOOLSE ORDER CASTLE, 05.11.2007

Toolse order castle was presumably founded in 1471 by the order master Wolthus von Herset. The building was supposed to protect the harbour from the raids of the pirates.

Initially a three-storey fortified manor house and tower were erected which later formed the western side of the castle. The latter was expanded at the end of the 15th century and became a complex with an inner and a front courtyard with walls 14 m high and 2 m thick.

Further additions to the castle included a gate tower in the east, with the task of safeguarding the later camp yard and the castle's north-western corner. A round cannon tower was erected behind the northern wall of the old manor house. Toolse's walls were made higher at the same time, and two danskers built in the northern wall.

There are no records of the castle during the Livonian War, but by the end of the 17th century the castle could only be used partially. After the Northern War the castle was abandoned for good.

Toolse is situated by the Bay of Kunda, on the right bank of Toolse river near the Kunda-Karepa road.

Toolse ordulinnuse ehitusajaks loetakse 1471. aastat ja selle rajajaks ordumeister Wolthus von Herset. Kants pidi kaitsma sealset sadamat mereröövlite rüüsteretkede eest.

Algselt rajati kolmekorruseline majalinnus ja torn, mis hiljem moodustasid kantsi läänepoolse otsa. Juba sama sajandi lõpuaastail linnust laiendati, nii et kujunes välja sise- ja eeshooviga kompleks, mille müüride kõrguseks oli 14 m ja paksuseks 2 m.

Linnuse edasisteks lisanditeks said itta püstitatud väravatorn, mille funktsiooniks oli turvata mõni aeg hiljem rajatud laagerhoovi ja kantsi loodenurka, aga vana maja-linnuse põhjaseina taha ehitati ümar suurtükitorn. Suurtükitorni ehitamisega üheaegselt kõrgendati Toolse müüre ja ehitati põhjapoolsesse seina kaks danskerit.

Linnuse saatusest Liivi sõja ajal pole teateid, kuid 17. saj. lõpul oli kants kasutamiskõlblik veel vaid osaliselt. Põhjasõja järel hüljati linnus lõplikult.

Ordulinnuse varemed asuvad väga maalilises kohas Kunda lahe ääres, Kunda-Karepa mnt. lähedal Toolse jõe paremal kaldal.
