Taevaskoja (a village of the same name is 6 km from Põlva) is probably the
most attractive tourist destination in Põlva County. Information stands and
signage in Saesaare help you to find the right way. The Saesaare hydroelectric
power station, huge outcrops of Devonian sandstone called Väike Taevaskoda
[Small House of Heaven] (length 190 m, height 13 m) and Suur
Taevaskoda [Large House of Heaven] (length 150 m, height 24 m) are the
best known objects of the landscape reserve of the primeval valley of the
Ahja River (total length 18 km). You can admire the Maiden’s Cave, Mother’s
Spring and Spy’s Stone or Witch’s Stone and all of them are connected
with lots of legends. In summer the Lonny riverboat makes short cruises on
Saesaare artificial lake and you can have beautiful views of the banks of the
Ahja River.
