The construction of Laiuse Order Stronghold, using natural stones and bricks,
began at the end of the 14th century. The first castle in the territory of Estonia,
built to cope with firearms, was first mentioned in 1406. During the Great
Northern War, from 1700 to 1701, after the Battle of Narva, the Swedish king
Karl XII established his winter quarters here. Laiuse limestone church-fortification
dedicated to St. John was first mentioned in 1319. A lime tree planted by
Karl XII in 1701 grows in the churchyard at the rear of the parsonage.www.southestonia.info |
