St Catherine's Church is the smallest on Saaremaa but nonetheless contains rooms for refugees and travellers. Note the symbols that form part of the wall murals, probably of pagan origin. The carvings on the pillars show how international the island had become during the 15th century. Masons trained in Germany, Sweden and probably France all contributed to their diverse themes and designs. Note also St Catherine clasping a book as the patron saint of scholars, and St Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors, with a monk kneeling beside him holding a boat.
