Elva is a small quiet town with a population of 6,200. Elva has got a poetic
name of Pine Town thanks to the pines which are older than a hundred
years and grow in Elva-Peedu forest park. The biggest lake of Elva is the
drop-shaped Lake Verevi (also called Suurjärv), which is 11 m deep and a
popular place for swimming. The only Estonian Strauss Society, founded in
Elva, organises parties with the music of Strauss on the Elva singing festival
ground every summer. At the beginning of the 18th century the postal road St. Petersburg – Tartu
– Riga was opened with 15 stages. The former Uderna station, which functioned
until 1922, was situated in front of the present Elva Elementary
School. One of the oldest buildings in Elva is the former Uderna inn.
The origin and history of the town is closely connected with the opening of
the Tartu – Riga railway line. The passenger traffic started in 1888 although
the building of the station was completed only in 1889. Elva is a well-known
summer resort, the Estonian-Finnish writer Aino Kallas also liked to come
