Peter the Great's summer-palace (1718-1723) is a fine example of Baroque architecture. The general plan for the palace and the park (1)
were drafted by the Italian architect, Niccolo Michetti. Since the royal family very seldom stayed at the palace, the building has fulfilled various other functions throughout history. In 1921, the rooms vere given to the Art Museum of Estonia. In 2000, the renovated palace was opened as the foreign art collection of the Art Museum. Visit also the House Museum of Peter I.

One of Tallinn's most prominent monuments (2) is the memorial to the crew of the armoured ship Russalka (The Mermaid). Russalka perished in the Gulf of Finland in an autumn storm in 1893. The monument depicts a figure of an angel raised on a high base, which looks to be floating above the sea. The monument was sculptured in 1902 by Amandus Adamson.
